Why Schism / Great Catholic Church because of the loss of great power politics?
If the Pope does not agree w / King of France to tax the clergy had a face w / the Italians, who (in my mind) have led to increased power of the Catholic Church, as opposed to the Orthodox Church and the Pope had on their side … Could someone explain? Thanks
The Papal Schism of 1378-1417 saw two (and a point 3) all the popes who claims to be different the rightful holder of the position. As each pope excommunicated all the regular supporters of his rival, the average person could not be sure if "your" Papa was true, and if not, would be condemned to hell for eternity when died.This caused enormous loss of confidence in the Catholic Church right across Europe. Ordinary people have no choice in which the pope to follow, the decision was made by the kings and governors of different states and regions.Essentially, King of France has supported the fight against the popes (as well as those who finished on the losing side is known), who left Rome and back in Avignon with the French cardinals, saying his papacy legitimate. Everyone supports the Pope in Rome. The loss of political power, and that with a divided papacy came to the Catholic Christian division of Europe. The Pope had no power or jurisdiction over the premises that support the other, then the Catholic Church as a loss of credibility, power, influence and income.
